The bed bug cycle

Below we have put together an example of how a bed bug infestation will grow from the moment it is introduced. Please be aware these numbers are not exact. There are instances where bugs can take shorter or longer times to feed. The eggs can also hatch quicker/slower in certain circumstances.

The days/weeks and number of bugs are in bold.

The number of bites are in italic.

Day 1– Bed bugs introduced to the property. 2 bed bugs are introduced one is a female one is a male. The female is fertile.

Week 1 (7 days) – Females lay 3-5 eggs per day. In this example we will use 3 eggs per day. Bed bugs feed every 7-10 days and can take 3 bites per feed. You may receive 2-6 bites this week.

End of week 1: 2 adult bed bugs. 21 eggs.

Week 2 (14 days) – Eggs take 18 days to hatch (on average). You may receive 2-6 bites this week.

End of week 2: 2 adult bed bugs, 42 eggs.

Week 3 (21 days) – This week eggs would begin to hatch. You may receive 23-69 bites this week. Please be aware Nymphs will not take as big of a blood meal as an adult. In turn they will not inject as much anti coagulant and you may not have as bad reaction as you would to an adult bite.

End of week 3: 2 adult bed bugs, 21 nymphs, 42 eggs.

week 4 (28 days) – During this week your would have the same activities as week 3, but in a progressively higher volume. The first stage nymphs will now begin to shed their skin in order to grow to stage 2. You may receive 44-132 bites.

End of week 4: 2 adult bed Bugs, 42 nymphs, 42 eggs.

Week 5 (35 days): During this week you would have the same activities as week 4, again with a higher volume. This week you may receive 63-189 bites.

End of week 5: 2 adults, 63 nymphs, 42 eggs.

Week 6 (42 days): During this week you would have the same activities as week 5, again with a higher volume. As your number of bugs in the room increase, this may be when you bugs move onto different areas of the room or a different room completely. The female will want to escape from the male as he will continue to impregnate her. This week you may receive 86-258 bites.

End of week 6: 2 Adults, 84 nymphs, 42 eggs

week 7 (49 days): During this week you would have the same activities as week 6, again with a higher volume. As your number of bugs in the room increase, this may be when you bugs move onto different areas of the room or a different room completely. The female will want to escape from the male as he will continue to impregnate her. The number of bites received, would happen over the course of 7 days and maybe spread across different individuals in the property.  This week you may receive 107-321 bites.

End  of week 7: 2 adults, 105 nymphs, 42 eggs

Week 8 (56 days): During this week you would have the same activities as week 7, again with a higher volume. As your number of bugs in the room increase, this may be when you bugs move onto different areas of the room or a different room completely. The female will want to escape from the male as he will continue to impregnate her. End of week 8: 2 adults, 126 nymphs, 42 eggs
